“Let’s fix a date and go. It’ll probably be a two-day trip each way. We can stay in Bristol and find the camp and pay your father.”
“You are too kind,” I tell him.
“Will they hate me?” he asks.
“If they do, we’ll go away, but anyway, they’ll expect you to let them camp on your land next time they come around.”
I look at him expectantly, and finally he nods.
“Horses and all? Even the fortune teller’s tent and the dancing?” he asks.
“Yes. As long as you promise not to join in.”
“I promise.”
When handsome Lord Davenport finds a young gypsy woman camping out on his property, he captures her and takes her home, with the intention of making her his little. She is bathed, dressed like a proper young girl, and put into the nursery. He discovers she is woefully ignorant and totally innocent, and vows to teach her, both in the schoolroom and the bedroom. He also introduces her to the concept of strict discipline, and she frequently finds herself over his lap. Seems like a fair trade to me. If he camps on their land, he should return the favor when they visit him. That is as long as he has enough property to hold them all. A gypsy camp usually isn't small.
