Today's snippet comes from a further part of "The Cowboy and the Mail-Order Bride."
This time Eleanor's visiting her friend Penelope,
who helped set her up with her husband, John Henry.

“So,” she said, once we were alone. “Has he spanked you yet?”
“Penny,
please.”
“Come
on, El. I’d tell you.”
I
glanced at her.
“Well,
if you must know, I got it last night with a switch.”
Of
course, she wanted all the details, and when I was done telling her about the
whipping, she smiled ruefully.
“You
always were one to let your mouth get you into trouble. Remember that time at Miss Chasen’s when she
made you stand up and recite Shelley because of what you said about poetry
being for dull old maids?”
“How
could I forget? I hate to speak in front
of people like that.”
